Yuba City Farm Workers Camp
memories
I have many fond memories of him, working on the Yuba City farms. After he graduated from University of Nevada in Reno, he did not have a job. He had applied for immigration to Canada but it had not been granted yet. So he came to Yuba City and stayed with us where I was living with three other students in the basement of a house. We did not have a fridge and nor did we have any beds. One of us had an old mattress on the floor to sleep on but I was not one of them. So we used to spread our blankets on the floor and use pillows if we had one otherwise books wrapped up in bed sheet served as our pillows. Bai ji used to tie a Thathi (a small swath of cloth) to keep his jaw tightly to the top of his head to cut down on his snoring.
He was a man who was not a profit seeker when he met someone, his only interest was greet adults and children with open arms and make them feel welcome. For years he was happy to live in a bachelor's apartment and yet he invited all who wanted to come. Even when he got married both Jaswinder ji and Bai ji lived in the same bachelor's apartment because big showy homes and cars which he could well afford did not interest him. He valued human beings. - Anonymous
